What We Tested This Week:A simplehuman Trash Can With Voice and Motion Sensor
Who This Is Perfect for:Everyone, really!
Honestly, I never thought I could get excited about a trash can until I spent the past few weeks with this fancy can from . Its ability to open with voice commands made mundane (and often messy) kitchen tasks easy to conquer. As a result, I no longer have to obsess over dripping espresso from my machine’s portafilter, or liquid from anything I just sliced on the cutting board (like, say, a raw piece of chicken breast that’s often a natural source of salmonella) before I toss it in the garbage.
The life-altering sensor trash can by simplehuman is as effortless to use as it gets. All you need to say is “open can.” The command will spring the gadget’s quiet motor into life, getting it ready to rid you of your garbage. In case you want to be more discreet, you can also open the can with a waving hand gesture.
I particularly love the design and the germ-resistant, fingerprint-proof finish of the simplehuman trash can. Available in five distinct stainless steel finishes (black, white, dark bronze, rose gold, and brushed steel), it is surprisingly elegant and an impeccably thought-out object that'll look sleek in your kitchen.
I admire that simplehuman designers have ensured that the liners of the can are out of sight. There is even a discreet compartment for fresh liners for a seamless change.
The device is superbly put together and ready for years of heavy use. In a manner befitting its price tag of 0, simplehuman backs the product with a sweet 5-year warranty.
It took me only a couple of minutes to set up the trash. I find it really convenient that simplehuman gives you the option to power the trash can via a bundled adapter, or, in case you don’t want to deal with wires, by installing six AA batteries. The latter will last for weeks between replacements.
What Idon’tlove about the clever simplehuman trash can is how pricey its proprietary custom-fit liners are. At for a box of 100, they are more than twice as expensive as the big-name brands you are probably using. Given the mess-free convenience, however, you’ll probably find the extra cost to be well worth it.
