What is Hepatitis C and Why Should You Care?

Family Man Thomas Limes
Depression was a major hurdle during the years Thomas Limes of Denver lived with chronic hepatitis C. “I couldn’t finish a thought," Limes says. "I couldn’t read a book. I was in despair." He sought care at a counseling center where, he says, “The psychiatrist got me over my crisis. I walked out with some peace of mind."
What put him at risk:Limes’s hepatitis came from a blood transfusion after an automobile accident in 1984, before the U.S. national blood supply was screened for contamination. Limes also struggled with drug addiction and was incarcerated several times, both of which can increase exposure to hepatitis C.
Road to recovery:Therapy with interferon injections plus ribavirin did not control Limes’s infection, and he had difficult side effects — including depression. He joined a trial of Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) that cleared hepatitis C from his body after 12 weeks. For peer support, Limes joined his local Hep C Connection support group, where he attends meetings with his wife, Cheri (shown in the photo above with their daughter, Keanna).
