How to Personalize Google News

Two Methods:

This wikiHow teaches you how to customize your Google News page or app. Since Google News is based on your browsing history, you can't filter the news that appears in your feed without manually removing or requesting more of specific topics or sources.

Steps

On Desktop

  1. Open the Google News page.Go to in your computer's web browser.
  2. Sign into your Google account.If you aren't signed into your Google account, clickSign inin the top-right corner of the page, then enter your email address, clickNEXT, enter your password, and clickNEXTagain.
    • Skip this step if you see your account's picture in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Open the menu if necessary.By default, you should see a sidebar with a list of options on the left side of the page; if not, clickin the top-left corner of the page to prompt it to appear.
  4. Change your language and region settings.Place your mouse cursor on the left side of the page and scroll down to the "Language & region" section, then do the following:
    • ClickLanguage & region.
    • Check the box next to the language and region (in "Language | Region" format).
    • ClickUpdatein the bottom-right corner.
  5. Scroll up and clickFor you.This tab is near the top of the left-hand menu. Doing so brings up Google's list of news items tailored to you.
  6. Review Google's news picks for you.You can scroll down through the list of news articles to see the full extent of the news that Google consider to be relevant to you.
  7. Indicate that you want to see more of a specific topic.If you see a topic you want to see more often in your Google News feed, do the following:
    • Place your mouse cursor on the topic's link.
    • Click theicon that appears below the link.
    • ClickMore stories like thisin the resulting drop-down menu.
  8. Avoid specific topics in the future.Just like you can request more of a certain topic, you can also avoid topics in the future by doing the following:
    • Place your mouse cursor on the topic's link.
    • Click theicon that appears below the link.
    • ClickFewer stories like thisin the resulting drop-down menu.
  9. Hide an entire source from your news.If you find a source from which you don't want to read news, you can hide the source from future news results by doing the following:
    • Place your mouse cursor on a link from the source.
    • Click theicon that appears below the link.
    • ClickHide stories from [source]in the resulting drop-down menu.

On Mobile

  1. Open Google News.Tap the Google News app icon, which resembles green, red, yellow, and blue cards on a white background.
    • If you aren't automatically signed into Google News when you open the app, enter your email address and password when prompted.
  2. Tap theFor Youtab.This option is in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  3. Review Google's news picks for you.You can scroll down through the list of news articles to see the full extent of the news that Google consider to be relevant to you.
  4. Indicate that you want to see more of a specific topic.To approve a topic and request more of it in future news results, do the following:
    • Tap(iPhone) or(Android) to the right of a topic.
    • TapMore stories like thisin the resulting drop-down menu.
  5. Avoid specific topics in the future.If you want to avoid a specific topic in future news results, do the following:
    • Tap(iPhone) or(Android) to the right of a topic.
    • TapFewer stories like thisin the resulting drop-down menu.
  6. Hide an entire source from your news.You may come across an entire source that you want to eliminate from your news results. You can hide sources by doing the following:
    • Tap(iPhone) or(Android) to the right of a topic.
    • TapHide all stories from [source].
  7. Tap your profile icon.It's in the top-right corner of the screen. Doing so opens a pop-up menu at the bottom of the screen.
  8. TapSettings.This is in the middle of the pop-up menu. Your account preferences page will open.
  9. Update your language and region.If you want to change the language in and/or the region from which you receive news, do the following:
    • TapLanguage & region(on Android, tapPreferred language & region) at the top of the page.
    • Scroll down until you find your preferred language and region (listed in "Language | Region" format).
    • Tap your preferred language and region to select it.

  • When using the Google News mobile app, you can change specific settings such as how degrees are presented (e.g., Fahrenheit) or Google app settings (e.g., which Google apps Google News can access) from theSettingspage.

Warnings

  • While you used to be able to filter your news results based on specific categories, you can no longer adjust the topics which appear in Google News without manually removing specific topics or sources.
