Alcohol Effects on Fitness - Bad For Your Gains?
How does alcohol affect muscle growth?
Arnold Schwarzenegger used to lace his protein shakes with rum in the belief it boosted their efficacy, but according to a new study published in the journalPLOS One, thats one nutrition tip from the seven-time Mr Olympia you can safely ignore.
Researchers made eight athletes work out and then fed them either two 25g protein hits and orange juice, the same protein paired with a succession of double vodkas, or the booze and just carbs. They found the abstemious showed the biggest gains, while drinking cut growth by between 24% and 37%. Thats a third of your workout wasted because you couldn't resist the lure of the pub.
The athlete who binge drinks after training is likely to benefit less from strength training-induced muscle growth, says lead researcher John Hawley.
