Don't Delay On Getting That Mammogram!

Don't Delay That Mammogram

I know that the latest mammogram recommendations are a bit confusing. Many groups, like the American Cancer Society, say you need an annual mammogram starting at age 40, but the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says you can wait until 50 and do it every 2 years. Personally, I don't think waiting until 50 is the way to go, but if you're in your 40s and still putting it off I'll give you a temporary pass (assuming your doctor agrees). You ladies in your 50s, however, have some explaining to do…

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 20% of women ages 50-74 haven't gotten screened within the past two years. I'm sure there are many reasons why, including not living near a mammogram facility or not having the necessary money or health insurance (though you can find out about how to get a free mammogram here.) But I imagine that a lot of you are simply scared.

I understand your reluctance. Although I'm still in my 30s, I have a family history of breast cancer, which means that I'm supposed to start screenings earlier than the so-called "average" woman. Over the past few years I've asked several doctors when I should get my first test and got different answers, which made it easier to postpone the inevitable for a little while.

Putting it off seemed like a good plan, because who reallywantsto get a mammogram? I had heard that mammograms hurt—like slamming your boobs in the refrigerator, someone told me. And then there's the frightening thought that they might actually find something…

Finally, a few months ago, I decided to just get it over with. And you know what? It wasn't so bad. I'm not going to claim that it was a fun experience, or that it's totally pain-free, but the technician was nice and as gentle as possible and the whole mildly-uncomfortable situation was over in a matter of minutes.

Fortunately, my first test didn't pickup anything abnormal, but you should know that even if yours does the sooner you get that result the better your chances are of beating cancer. Mammograms may not be perfect, but they do save lives.
