• Old book

• Craft knife or razor blade

• Pencil

• Ruler

• Purse handles

• 4 2-inches pieces of ½”-wide nylon strapping or grosgrain ribbon

• Hot glue gun and glue sticks

• Felt

• Scissors

• ½” wide elastic

• Craft glue

Step 1

Open the book and remove the pages with a craft knife; discard the pages.

Step 2

Lay the book flat, cover side down, and measure the dimensions of the inside of the book. Mark those measurements on a piece of felt and cut out.

Step 3

Measure the width of your handles and mark the spots for it to attach to the book (centered between the top and bottom) with a pencil. Hot-glue a 2” piece of ribbon in place with 1” hanging off the edge, loop it through the handle, then hot-glue it back down to close the loop.

For pen and notebook holder: Make 1-inch-long six pencil marks as shown, ½” apart and 4 ½” to the last one, about 2” down from the top of your portfolio.

Cut out your marks with the craft knife.

To make the pockets: Measure the areas you want to cover, adding ½” all around. Cut out. (You will be folding the ½” under to make the pocket.)

Cut off any corners where both sides will be folded at an angle so they will lie flat.

Starting with the smaller pocket, place it in position on the large piece of felt, with the extra ½” of fabric overlapping the edges. Flip the two pieces over and apply a thin line of hot glue to the back bottom edge of the felt. Fold the pocket felt onto it. Repeat with other edge. Do the same for the outside edges of the larger pocket.

For the inside edges of the pockets, draw a line of hot glue at the edge of where they will attach. Fold the edge under ½” inch, then attach the folded edge to the glue.

Steps 10 & 11

Cut the elastic to the width from the first to last slices, plus 2”. Position your felt on the open book. Thread the elastic through the first (furthest) pocket, with 1” underneath. Hot-glue the book cover.

Thread the elastic through the remaining holes. Fold the extra under and hot-glue to the book.
