Graphical image of heartOne of the most common cardiac problems, Mitral Valve Prolapse, is a valvular heart disease which is typified by the displacement of a thickened mitral valve leaflet. The mitral valve is positioned between the upper left chamber and lower left chamber of the heart and is made of two rhythmic flaps of tissues. In the absence of a proper closure between the hearts left upper chamber, also known as, left atrium, and the left lower chamber, denoted as, left ventricle, the problem of Mitral Valve Prolapse comes into existence.  During its occurrence, the valve bulges in an upward or backward direction into the atrium. Sometimes the condition leads to the leakage of blood in the backward direction into the atrium. The following condition is called “Mitral Valve Regurgitation”. It has been noticed that the problem is not life-threatening and sometimes, people don’t require a treatment for the same.

Causes

The problem of Mitral Valve Prolapse is caused when during the contraction of the left ventricle; the mitral valve closes completely and prevents the blood to flow back into the heart’s upper left atrium. In some people, the flaps of the mitral valve have extra tissues, which bulge like a parachute into the left atrium, at the time of each contraction in the heart.

Symptoms
Mitral Valve Prolapse is considered a lifelong disorder and it is being noticed many a times, that many suffering from this problem do not face any symptoms.  It moreover, comes as a surprise to them when diagnosed by a doctor.
The symptoms of this disorder may vary from individual to individual and some may develop gradually. Some of them include an irregular or fasting heartbeat, dizziness, and shortness of breath. This happens mostly while one lies in a flat position or is involved in a physical activity. The problem of fatigue is also seen in some cases. Another symptom considered is the pain in the chest area. The pain doesn’t have any relation with the heart attack or coronary artery disease.

Treatment
If one notices any of the symptoms mentioned above, then they are advised to see a doctor as soon as possible.  There are other disorders, which also have the same symptoms as the Mitral Valve Prolapse, so one is advised to get their problem diagnosed by a proficient practitioner.
There are multiple treatments one can undergo, after they are diagnosed with the following disorder.
At the first stage, your doctor might prescribe you some preliminary medications. It may include Beta Blockers, Asprin and some prescription anticoagulants, also known as blood thinners.
Though most of the patients suffering from this disorder don’t need a surgery, but it totally depends on the individual case. One may then have to undergo a Valve repair or a Valve replacement surgery.
There are people who take several antibiotics, when they are hit by the disorder, but according to the latest study, antibiotics are no longer a necessity in the cases suffering from Mitral Valve Prolapse. Though there lies a chance to use these in some cases.
Do not ever forget to make a visit to your doctor, in case of any doubts, confusion and worries.
